Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year. It lasts more than just the one day, it's a month long (for me anyway. Yes, I started listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Don't judge.) But besides the festive decor and crazy social schedule, visiting with friends is something I really look forward to.

Our dear friends at San Antonio Wedding and Event Consultants stopped by last week to drop off some goodies. Teresa, who wasn't able to be there with Melanie and Krystle, made, from scratch, delicious sweets for all of us to enjoy.

I forgot to take pictures of all the treats before we stuffed our faces. And here we are, we're missing a couple of people on our staff though. Can you name us?

But before you venture out to do your research, know this. First off, there is a difference on who makes your cake. Are they a baker or pastry chef? What's the difference? Well, this article here explains it best.

With that said think about it do you want just another cake or do you want it to be absolutely fabulous for the palate and the eye? Well.. if you prefer the latter, then you definitely have to call The Cake Shop. They're stuff is soooooo good.

And not only are they super moist and delicious, they're always looking for ways to make things better. They have a large selection of flavors and designs for you to get inspired. And they also create sugar-free cakes, gluten-free cakes, dairy and egg-free cakes and vegetarian specialties (a huge deal for those who need something tasty and diet-specific).

e-mail for invitations?

Q: It is bad etiquette to e-mail my guests asking if they think they might attend my wedding?
A: Yes and No. It's complicated. Let's explain.

Part 1 of 2:
It's not polite to send e-mails (including facebook messages or event notifications) as:

- Wedding Invitations:
You're wedding is special right? It's an important celebration that you want to share with those you love? If you consider it so, those you wish to celebrate with you are worth the few dollars (for invitation and postage) it costs to send a paper invite. Asking them if they think they might attend is just asking for hurt feelings. Don't do it.

Instead, make lists (several) and filter out anyone you haven't spoken to in the last year, whose last name you can't remember, or are only aware of by association (your mom's 3rd cousin who lives in Mexico).

- For Thank-You Notes:
Someone was nice enough to attend (or not) your wedding and get you a gift. While they might have just gone to the bridal kiosk, printed out the list of items you registered for, find a particular item on that list and pay the cashier for it... they still got you a gift.

Plain and simple. Send them a formal thank you.

- When addressing touchy issues:
For one, it's on the Internet. It's not private. And two, it's extremely hard to communicate emotions. You can't pick up on bodily language. And no, just because you put a smiley face or an "lol" at the end of the sentence doesn't make it OK.

- When plans aren't set:
If your maid-of-honor is throwing you a bridal shower and you haven't confirmed dates or times. Don't send out a mass e-mail to everyone you're inviting if you don't know the details. Get with the key people before doing so.

First Dance Song: What's yours?

Nothing brings back a memory, for me at least, like a certain smell--except sound (songs in particular). Like The Cure's "If You Leave" makes me want to go home, plop on the couch with some popcorn and watch The Breakfast Club. Watching Brat Pack movies always puts me in a good mood.

Which brings me the First Dance topic. Have you found your song yet? What is it? How did you go about selecting it? Picking just the right one can certainly be a challenge. But sometimes it'll just come to you. You knew right when you heard it that it was going to be "your" song.

But, for several, the task to pick a tune that is just perfect can leave you a bit overwhelmed. Our song, Lifehouse's "You and Me" is special because that was the first concert we went to as a couple and we like their style (and almost all their songs).

Now, when I hear any Lifehouse song I think back, not only to the wedding, but to the entire time I was planning it. It makes even rough days not so bad.

So my advice to you for selecting a song is pick a something that already holds a bit of significance, fits the genre of music you like and is something that you can listen to a few times over and it not drive you nuts. :)

Welcome cool weather and the first Friday of November. As usual, picking just a few photos from our local photographers each week is an extremely difficult task. So how do I do it? When selecting the four I want to feature each week, I look for something that evokes an emotion. Do any of this week's picks make you feel something?

Why do I like this picture?

Well, a lot of reasons. I love how it looks so spontaneous. The blurry leaves in front of the lens and the texture of the tree in the background really stand out to me. The lady's dress is super cute and very flirty. The books on the chair make you curious to know more about the subjects' personalities. And I just love the location of this shoot. The vineyards are beautiful. Makes me think of a romantic summer's day.

Why do I like this picture?

The lighting is great. And while I'm not typically a fan of centered poses, this one works well. It's slightly off-centered and the range of colors and light reflecting off the subjects really stands out.

Why do I like this picture?

No, it's not because it reminds me of the movie Pearl Harbor (OK, maybe a little). But the serious answer would be because a good photographer (hi Kurtis) knows exactly how to capture the personality of their subject. The lighting is great, the colors pop... beautiful.

Why do I like this picture?

Simply put, I couldn't stop laughing. Imagine it. I'm at work...working.. and I'm giggling to myself (for at least five minutes) while listing to Christmas music. Thank goodness no one else was really paying attention. Kristin (from Urth Studio) is real good at getting people to open up too. Those are some great expressions eh?

The wedding is finally over, everything went great, and now you are getting ready for that relaxing honeymoon vacation you have planned with your new hubby. Life is good. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Well, as Monica Velasco from All About Honeymoons & Destination Weddings reveals, life happens. Sometimes no matter how well you plan, unforeseen circumstances can arise, causing even the best-laid plans to go awry.

Read on to find out why Monica says it pays to purchase travel protection when planning for your honeymoon:

Last week was an excellent reminder of how wonderful it is to be protected when travel is involved. Needless to say, when I recommend that you purchase travel protection when booking your dream Honeymoon or romantic getaway, it’s not about ill-wishing your fantastic travel plans, but life happens and you need to be ready!

The first reminder arrived in the form of 2 emails from 2 different clients who needed to cancel their Honeymoons at the very last moment. Both cancelled for different reasons (luckily, no accidents or tragedies), and both ended their emails saying, “Thank you for convincing me to purchase travel protection…I had no idea I would need to cancel and would have lost all my money!”. So again, it’s not about jinxing you and yours, but it’s about feeling at ease and being protected.

And when I say life and the unexpected happen, they really do! I am writing this while heading back home after a week of work in the Riviera Maya (visiting wonderful properties), where feeling protected and looked after by the resort where I stayed made a huge difference. Hurricane Paula threatened to hit the area and put a dent on our week there (not to mention, the structural damage that comes with such weather).

My resort, the fantastic El Dorado Royale, was absolutely professional and handled the matter accordingly. Printouts of the most updated weather map were posted throughout the property and left in the rooms every few hours. The staff worked diligently and calmly in order to put hurricane procedures into place without alerting the guests. Luckily, Paula took a turn to the East and all we had was a little rain….but boy, it was wonderful to feel protected!

So, next time you call me to book that special trip, put your mind at ease and purchase travel protection. Trust me --- life does happen!

Getting engaged was one of the best memories of my life! Everything was perfect: the man, the moment, and yes, the ring!
I think most of us women would agree that the ring is not the most important part of getting engaged, but it definitely ranks high on the importance scale. I mean, isn't that the question everyone asks after you tell them you are engaged. "Let me see the ring!" That being said, I think it is definitely important that you like your ring and are happy about wearing it everyday for the rest of your life.

Even though it is tradition for a soon-to-be-bride to be surprised with a gorgeous bauble she had no idea about, the trend is leaning toward more and more brides being totally involved in the process of choosing their ring.

Lighting to Set the Mood

If there is one thing you don't want to overlook at your wedding reception, it is definitely the right lighting to set the mood you are going for. While some brides may not see the necessity in it, you just might think twice after viewing the following pics (which in my opinion) lighting adds the final touch!

Magazine Debut Party: Elaine's Custom Cakes and Cookies

More kudos to our fabulous vendors for helping put together such a fabulous party for our magazine debut.

Today's photos, courtesy of Limelight San Antonio, feature the gorgeous and if I maysay, very tasty treats from Elaine's Custom Cakes and Cookies.

Chocolate cake with raspberry mousse and chocolate filling. If you like chocolate at any level, you'll LOVE this cake. :) So delicious I ate two slices. Shh.. don't tell. And the fun details on the cake make this not only yummy to eat, but a joy to admire.

This more traditional bride's cake was a classic white cake with pina colada filling and was a HUGE hit. Everyone loved this one in particular. Light, yet very flavorful. The elegant design worked so well with our beautiful theme. :)

And because the need for sweets didn't end when the cake was cut, guests got to take home more tasty deliciousness from Elaine's--sugar cookies with our logo. How awesome!

Our Debut Party, which was last night at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport was amazing. The food was great--fresh, hot and very tasty. The staff was wonderful. Everyone was extremely helpful from the beginning of the planning process right on through to the last person who walked out the door. Theresa, Sonia, Jay, Gayla and everyone else at the Holiday Inn great job. Thanks for all your hard work
